What Is an Immigration Evaluation?

An immigration evaluation (sometimes called a psychological or hardship evaluation) is a mental health assessment conducted by a licensed clinician to support specific immigration cases. These evaluations are used to document the emotional and psychological impact of trauma, hardship, or abuse.

Specifically, most evaluations focus on trauma, emotional distress, or mental health conditions such as PTSD or anxiety. Choosing a qualified, culturally aware therapist with experience in trauma and immigration issues is essential for a supportive and effective process.

At LETC, we specialize in compassionate, culturally responsive, trauma-informed care that honors each client’s story. Our team meets you with empathy every step of the way.

Available Immigration Evaluation Services

Presently, we offer immigration evaluations for the following case types:

  • Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Petition
  • U-Visa for Victims of Criminal Activity
  • T-Visa for Victims of Human Trafficking
  • Extreme Hardship Waivers

However, there are some services we cannot provide. These include N-648 waivers for naturalization, asylum evaluations, or any case that requires a licensed psychologist.

If your case falls outside our scope, please don’t worry. We’re happy to refer you to a trusted professional from our Immigration Evaluation Referral List. You are not alone in this.

What to Expect from the Immigration Evaluation Process

Your immigration evaluation will occur via secure Telehealth video sessions that are convenient, confidential, and accessible from anywhere in California. The process typically involves interviews, a review of mental health history and records, and results in a written report outlining how mental health factors may influence your case.

Choosing an experienced, culturally competent therapist (especially one knowledgeable in trauma and domestic violence) is key to obtaining an accurate and supportive evaluation. While these evaluations certainly provide critical documentation for your case, they can also help reduce anxiety and provide clarity as you navigate the immigration process.
