Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about our therapy services. If you’re wondering what to expect or how the process works, this is a great place to start.

We treat clients ages 10 to older adult. We also work with couples, families, and parents. We have several therapists on the team that specialize in working with pre-teens and adolescents.

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We understand that each person shows up with different experiences and needs, and it’s our job to match the approach to what works best for you.  We also don’t just listen and nod. We’re big on teaching tangible skills and strategies, so our clients leave sessions feeling equipped to handle any current challenge.

Therapy doesn’t have to be done weekly, or it can be. Frequency decisions will be made collaboratively between you and your therapist.  We get that schedules and budgets are moving targets, which is why our TeleHealth model works so well for our clients.  Clients can more easily attend their sessions, with a lot less juggling of work, childcare, health issues, or traffic.

Absolutely not. We don’t believe therapy should be done this way. While we DO believe that consistency matters to your results, we’ll never pressure you to commit to a certain number of sessions.  And no contracts ever – that’s just not our style.

We get this question all the time, so here’s the real talk – therapy is like any other change, it does take time and consistency. Want to lose weight, learn how to speak Italian, or up your Pickleball game? You’ll have to show up consistently and do the work.  Personal growth is the same.  Great thing about therapy is you get to partner with someone who can guide and support you along the way.

We’re confident we can help you.  We have a good-sized team of therapists from diverse backgrounds who specialize in treating a wide range of needs (including a lot of things other practices don’t!). Because we take an active and strategies-based approach, our clients see tangible results from our work together. We also have a good number of clients that continue with therapy after meeting their initial goals.  Not because they have to, but because they value having support to navigate life’s seasons.

And we pride ourselves on making therapy accessible to people from all walks of life.  Which is why our rates are so competitive (especially for CA), and start as low as $100 session. Rates do vary by provider or type of service, and our Intake Coordinator can answer your specific questions.

Our clients pay for each session and then we provide them with a Super Bill document. A Super Bill is the insurance-approved document clients submit to their insurance company for reimbursement. We find that many California insurance companies offer our clients generous reimbursements, and that the process is efficient.

Short on time? Be assured the process is easy and simple.  Reimbursement amounts depend on your plan, so we recommend contacting your insurance about your specific coverage.

Our Intake Coordinator is a former insurance biller and great at helping our clients understand the Super Bill process.  She’ll be straightforward about the steps, and will NEVER pressure you to use a Super Bill (we’ve heard some not-great stories about this kind of thing in the industry).

While our Intake Coordinator can’t verify your insurance benefits for you, she’ll answer any questions you have. We want starting therapy to feel as easy as possible for you.

We took insurance for 7 years prior to making this decision. Real talk – insurance companies don’t always play nice with outpatient psychotherapy services. They sometimes interfere with how therapists work with clients and for how long, as well as create extra hoops for therapists (and clients) to jump through in unique situations.

We value the freedom to choose how to support our clients, without the constraints and cookie-cutter approaches dictated by insurance companies. Honestly, liberating ourselves from insurance demands has helped our clients get even better results, because we’re able to personalize their support.

For example, check out our Concierge Services, designed for clients navigating unexpected and intensely stressful experiences, and who desire more support than what can be provided in a standard therapy hour.

Our clients tell us they think of therapy as an investment in themselves and their well-being – much like a gym membership, a regular facial, or a weekend getaway.  And what better investment, but one in your own future, happiness, and well-being? Because we know everyone benefits from that (our partner, our kids, our co-workers, our friends).

So, if investing in yourself feels scary for any reason, consider this your permission slip and reminder that you’re allowed to take really good care of you.  You’re worth it.

We take our work with clients very seriously and think you should too. We use the Free Consultation to make sure we’re a good match and that we can truly help you.

While we don’t do therapy on these brief calls, we will ask questions about what prompted you to reach out, what your needs are, and what you’re looking for in a therapist.  We’ll also share how we can help and answer any questions that feel important to you. (And if it makes sense to refer you to a colleague for the best fit, we’re happy to do that too!)

A first therapy session is about understanding the problem, its root causes, and how it’s impacting your life currently, so we can figure out how to shift all that and move you toward greater happiness. We’ll move at your pace and get into as much or as little as you want to at the first session. We’ll also use the first session to collaborate on treatment goals and to identify next steps to feeling better.
